It is unbelievable that many rock and roll fans never knew that the king of rock and roll Freddie Mercury was gay. He had to live most of his gay life behind closed doors despite his flamboyant nature. On stage was a relief for this great showman as he was able to express himself fully.
Freddie Mercury was labelled one of the most dynamic and charismatic front men in rock history by Allmusic after devoting all his energy to producing true entertainment to go with his own brand of breathtaking music. He lived most of his life outwardly straight even having a long time female partner Mary Austin who he had met through Brian May.
This was never meant to last long and Mercury was soon having an affair with a black male record executive. Mercury remained great friends with Mary Austin and sung several songs for her including Love of My Life and called her his only true friend. In his eyes they were a great couple but only his homosexuality prevented them being married.
By the end of the 1980s his lifestyle unfortunately was to get the better of him as he was diagnosed with AIDS which would eventually kill him. For a long time Mercury would deny that he was seriously ill before eventually revealing what had troubled him in 1991 by releasing a press statement declaring that he had been diagnosed HIV positive and had AIDS. He died at the age of 45 having lived so much of his amazing life behind closed doors.
